Our Unique NYC Summer Camp Lineup!

Today we will be at the New York Family Camp Fair with a table promoting our awesome 2010 lineup of NYC summer camp programs! We are really excited to be offering camps that incorporate art appreciation, photography and crafts. We will be set up at the fair at the Upper West Side Congregation Rodeph Shalom at 7 West 83rd St.  Come by and see us!!

Here is an overview of the camps we are offering this summer:

Bearden Collage & Museum Mini Camp

“A Walk Around the Block with Romare Bearden”

Day 1: Introduction to Romare Bearden

Through literacy and media, students will be introduced to Romare Bearden’s unique style of collage and start to think about our own collage creations

Day 2: Sketches & The Block

Discussions of The Block will lead us onto the street to draft our own blocks. Students will make connections to his block and our blocks and will attempt to reproduce a similar style when drafting.

Day 3: Museum Trip to the MET

By visiting The Block at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, students will be able to look closely at details.  Students will work to translate the details from The Block to the details to be added in their block.  Students will be excited to get back to the classroom and work on their collages.

Day 4: Collage Creation

Students will successfully use their drafts, photographs and noted details to create their collages.  They will look Bearden inspired and students will be able to discuss his influence.

Day 5: Narratives & Presentation

Students will record their written narratives and virtually comment on their classmates work using Voice Thread.  Students will successfully describe how their block acts as a reflection of both Bearden’s The Block and the neighboring community.

Photography & Art Journaling Mini Camp

Day 1: Its all about film! Go back in time using plastic toy Holga cameras to experience the basics of photography.  Then get introduced to the art of collage and journaling to start your week in the life journal.

Day 2: Go out and shoot!  While taking portraits of yourself and others, learn how to see things through the lens of a camera.  Or better yet, don’t look, just snap.

Day 3: Journaling is about seeing as well as writing.  Combine the two and work on the weekly life art journal.

Day 4: Control the light in the studio. Take different style portraits of each other when you can freeze the environment. This day will involve use of a digital SLR camera.

Day 5: Finally, have fun with pictures taken during in-class contests in the morning.  In the afternoon finishing touches will be made to the weekly journal.

Camp Memory Book Mini Camp

Day 1: Its all about learning the basics of making a memory book and choosing the mementos to go into the book.

Day 2: We will learn about journaling and telling more about your camp experience.

Day 3: Learn some cool new techniques to help make the book unique.  From stamping to embossing.

Day 4: Add something special to the book from flowers to cool trinkets to awesome embellishments!

Day 5: Finally we will put the finishing touches on the book and make sure you leave with a complete book to show all your friends.

Also Featuring: Afternoon Camp Memories

Afternoon Camp Memories will be held every Wednesday afternoon through July. It will be less structured than the mini camps.  Children will be encouraged to create projects to preserve some of their favorite camp moments.  Instructors will be on hand to help make layouts, mini books, full albums, or keepsake boxes.  Instructors will also be on hand to teach many new techniques from painting to embossing to stamping.  Guaranteed fun in a no fuss environment!
